Orientation course for students majoring in Poultry Science, Avian Biology, and Biological Sciences. Course focuses on providing students with skills, resources, and fundamental knowledge for academic and career planning. Topics such as college success, career exploration, and professionalism will be covered.

The biology of the domestic fowl, basic nutrition, genetics, reproduction, embryology, processing, and management as they pertain to commercial poultry production.

Evaluation of live poultry for production and breeder stock potential and poultry product quality evaluation and selection standards.

Judging of live poultry and poultry products.

Topics related to surgical procedures, including aspects of anatomy, physiology, immunology, wound healing, microbiology, surgical instrumentation, and surgical techniques. Emphasizes development of hands-on skills to operate surgical equipment and perform simple surgical procedures on anesthetized chickens.

Students will receive both classroom and laboratory training in the implementation of molecular techniques used for the diagnosis of avian diseases and the study of avian biology.

The ecological and physiological bases underlying complex avian behaviors such as mate choice, aggressive interactions, parental care, migration, and seasonality.

Course will focus on the relationship between microbiology, poultry production, and food safety and its implications for human health. Examination of methods aimed at preventing contamination and controlling pathogenic bacteria throughout various stages of production and processing. Course will also cover techniques for isolating, detecting, identifying, and enumerating relevant microorganisms. Regulatory control programs will also be addressed.

Exploration of the ethical considerations, production, processing, and nutritional significance of animal-derived products, highlighting their impact on human health and modern society. Topics include both edible products such as meat, milk, eggs, and seafood, as well as inedible products like leather, wool, gelatin, and pharmaceuticals.

Course will guide students to automatically process digital images and videos from biological systems. Students will be provided with introduction to basic concepts and methodologies for digital image processing and programming skills via Python. Basic elements include image segmentation, pattern recognition, machine learning for image classification, and object tracking.
