Plant Biology PHD

Program Description

Plant Biology (Ph.D.) students will be trained by a faculty that includes experts working at all scales of plant biology, from molecular and cellular to global, as well as experts in genomics, fungal biology, insect evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, and discipline-based science education. Many of our faculty maintain interdisciplinary projects across traditional areas. The program is designed for flexibility, enabling students to take full advantage of the unique breadth of opportunities (including teaching, grant writing, mentoring, outreach) to facilitate their specific professional training and research objectives. Students are trained to become independent scholars with deep enough disciplinary knowledge, research skills, and teaching experience to succeed in a range of careers, such as leading a competitive research program, educating undergraduates, and consulting or advocacy.

The major emphasis is on dissertation research: Ph.D. students work with faculty mentors to design a course of study that provides rigorous theoretical and methodological training while producing an original and significant contribution to their chosen field. All students will receive training in undergraduate teaching; those with a particular interest can pursue an Graduate Certificate in University Teaching, and work with discipline-based science education researchers to develop independent teaching projects towards their certificate.
