Apply to the UGA Graduate School and include the following: a) 3 Letters of recommendation b) CV c) Statement of Purpose (emphasizing career goals, objectives, and research plans); at the end of the statement include the names of up to 1 potential faculty who share your interests and could serve as your major advisor. d) Unofficial transcript (3.0 minimum gpa) e) International students: For students whose primary language is not English, proof of English proficiency is required. Students need to submit official university documents according to the UGA Graduate School requirements. Students will also have to show certificate of finances upon acceptance to the program.

The program of study includes 5 required courses, taken for a total of 17 hours. Additional hours are required for doctoral research and dissertation courses.

A Ph.D. in Environmental Design and Planning prepares individuals to work in a range of settings, including universities, governmental agencies at various levels (counties and cities, regional and state, and federal agencies), private consulting, research and development firms, and non-profit organizations.

Funding opportunities are competitive, and they rely on the College’s available funds (sometimes for the 1st or 2nd year, depending on qualifications). Outstanding applicants have been nominated to the Graduate School Presidential and PhD Fellows awards. Ultimately, students and advisors are also encouraged to seek internal and external fellowships and scholarships opportunities.

Students are encouraged to pursue research opportunities outside of Athens, when appropriate and in consultation with their committees.

Our College constantly shares with students internships and job opportunities, as a way to facilitate their professional development and career aspirations, and supplement summer funding opportunities.

Students are encouraged to present their research at conferences, professional meetings, and symposia. Both the College and the Graduate School have funds available to defray travel expenses for students who present. Students also are encouraged to write grant proposals, sometimes through their major professors or committee members, to help fund their research and to develop grant-writing skills. Students are expected to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
