The Ed.S. degree will enable students to earn their advanced certification while expanding their professional knowledge and skills. Students will learn emerging school counseling theories and models, evidence-based school counseling practices, anti-racist school counseling strategies, and other research-based practices to create inclusive learning environments and promote educational equity in schools.

This program is exempt from the GradFIRST requirement. Students are expected to maintain a 3.0 (B) grade point average; this is considered the benchmark for satisfactory progress with respect to coursework. Students who earn any grade below a C in a course will need to retake the course to earn a higher grade. Students are required to maintain employment as a school counselor for the duration of their advanced internship experience.

All students are already employed as school counselors as a prerequisite for admission. Successful completion of the degree allows graduates to receive advanced professional certification and increased compensation where offered.

While our recommendation of admission does not include funding, we will share opportunities to apply for scholarships and other financial support as they are brought to our attention. Most EdS students are not eligible for Departmental assistantships since they are already employed full time.

Students complete a 600-hour internship that spans an academic year (August-May). Students complete their internship at their work site as a part of their normal work duties. Students must accrue 300 hours per semester, with 120 of those 300 hours being devoted to providing direct services to students (e.g., individual counseling, group counseling, school counseling curriculum lessons). As part of the internship process, students will participate in group supervision on a regularly scheduled basis, resulting in an average of 90 minutes per week over the span of internship.
