Middle Grades Education online (M.A.T.) leads to initial certification for students who hold undergraduate degrees in other fields and who do not hold a teacher certification. The curriculum includes required courses and applied research individualized to the student’s teaching interests in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies, allowing students to gain advanced content knowledge and pedagogical skills in educating young adolescents.
University of Georgia’s Teacher Residency Program is a full-time, in-person, 3-semester program that prepares, supports, and retains middle grades teachers. In this initial certification program, teacher residents will earn a Master of Arts (M.A.T.) in Teaching degree in Middle Grades for 4th-8th grades in either English language arts, math, science, or social studies.

Cumulative GPA for all undergraduate courses should be 2.5 or above on a four-point scale. The state also requires that all candidates have a minimum 2.5 GPA for undergraduate or previous graduate work. Note: Students admitted to the program begin with their cohort in fall semesters only.
In addition to the Graduate School application, applicants will also submit: 1. Statement of Purpose 2. Resume/CV 3. Names and contact information for three people who can serve as references Applicants will be admitted based on the faculty’s evaluation of undergraduate GPA and, if relevant, TOEFL scores, quality of the essay, letters of recommendation, and resume.
