Middle Grades Education online (M.A.T.) leads to initial certification for students who hold undergraduate degrees in other fields and who do not hold a teacher certification. The curriculum includes required courses and applied research individualized to the student’s teaching interests in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies, allowing students to gain advanced content knowledge and pedagogical skills in educating young adolescents.
University of Georgia’s Teacher Residency Program is a full-time, in-person, 3-semester program that prepares, supports, and retains middle grades teachers. In this initial certification program, teacher residents will earn a Master of Arts (M.A.T.) in Teaching degree in Middle Grades for 4th-8th grades in either English language arts, math, science, or social studies.
