The M.S. in Ecology includes a traditional thesis-based option as well as a non-thesis option. It also includes an Area of Emphasis in Integrative Conservation and Sustainability.
The thesis option is ideal for students who have not previously led an independent research project, who are not certain they want to pursue a Ph.D., or whose professional goals do not require a Ph.D. Students work with faculty mentors to develop a research thesis that can be completed in two years and should result in a peer-reviewed publication. In addition to their research, the student also takes coursework that helps them learn advanced concepts and develop skills relevant to their career goals.
The non-thesis M.S. in Ecology is intended for students pursuing a professionally-oriented program of study who do not require independent research as part of their portfolio. The non-thesis option supports the long-term goal to enhance and broaden the M.S. Ecology degree to appeal to more students with a broader career outlook.
