The PhD in Counseling Psychology provides training and coursework in discipline-specific knowledge, profession-wide competencies in psychology, and social justice and advocacy coursework.

Students are expected to maintain a high grade-point average (3.0 or better on the 4-point scale); this is considered the benchmark for satisfactory progress with respect to coursework. Students who earn grades below a B- (2.33) in a course will need to retake the course to earn a higher grade.

Students are required to demonstrate proof of student liability insurance prior to beginning practicum.

Select additional courses, as needed, in consultation with an advisor to meet the minimum number of required credit hours for this program.

Most program graduates pursue licensure as a psychologist and pursue careers in a variety of clinical settings (e.g., private practice, university health centers, VAs, counseling centers, academic medical centers, hospitals) as well as institutions of higher education as faculty members and researchers.

While our recommendation of admission does not include funding, we will share opportunities to apply for assistantships as they are brought to our attention. We also encourage students to search for assistantship opportunities throughout the university.

Students are expected to complete a total of 12 credit hours in ECHD 9860 in an APA-approved internship site. Students will register for practicum courses while they are engaged in clinical work that includes counseling, conducting assessments, and/or supervising master’s students.

Counseling Psychology Student Association (CPSA) aims to provide all graduate students in the counseling psychology program a place for supportive and growth-oriented opportunities for activities and discussion on issues pertinent to their academic and professional development.
