A degree in a Science Field is the primary mechanism to meet the requirements to enter this program. Specifically, a degree in biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, or earth science are the typical degrees, but other science degrees are also allowed. However, candidates should meet the minimum content requirements described below. Before applying, we suggest that you consider our guidelines for content-area preparation, listed below, and judge how your science course background compares. Option 1 (less specific, along the lines of minimum state requirements): Have at least 6 college courses in the same field in which you plan to pass the GACE test, at least 4 of which are above the introductory level. Option 2 (more rigorous, strongly recommended and preferred by our faculty): Have taken a two-course, introductory, laboratory sequence in one of these basic science fields, plus specialized courses beyond the introductory level in each of the major subfields listed:

ESCI 3450 is a Field Experience course that does not satisfy degree requirements and does not count towards the 36 graduate hours and should not be included on the Program of Study submitted to the Graduate School. It is required for certification. This course should be taken along with ESCI 4450/6450, ESCI 4460/6460, and ESCI 4480/6480.

The capstone requirement for the degree is a certification portfolio, incorporating samples of work during all phases of the program, and students’ reflective commentaries on that work.
