The Master of Arts in Teaching degree leads to certification as a secondary school mathematics teacher (grades 6-12) and is intended for professionals with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field who also have a strong mathematics background. Our program consists of at least 46 hours of coursework. Coursework includes required and elective courses in Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematics education. Courses address content, curriculum, and teaching methods, while also addressing the use of technology for teaching and learning mathematics. Field experiences, including student teaching, are an essential part of the program.

Student will complete 10 hours of field experience through student teaching or internship, along with a professional seminar.
All candidates must meet certification requirements. These requirements may necessitate taking courses beyond those needed for the MAT (e.g., EDSE 2000). Requirements include at least a B in EDSE 6030. All candidates must obtain a passing score on GACE II test to be eligible for state certification upon graduation. There may also be other state requirements and program students should ensure to review these.
