Plant Biology BS

Overview

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in Plant Biology is a liberal arts degree with a concentration in the plant sciences. It prepares students for ecologically- or biotechnology-oriented careers focusing on the plants that are foundational to the earth's biota and essential for supplying the world with food, fuel, and fiber.

The Plant Biology major is designed to give students a broad understanding of plant biology or plant and fungal biology relevant to current environmental and societal challenges, and getting a rewarding job or entrance to post-graduate programs of study. The Plant Biology major includes several core classes similar to those in other majors in the Biology Division (e.g., Genetics, Evolutionary Biology) but provides the flexibility to build an interdisciplinary program of study from a broad range of courses with an emphasis in either Plant Ecology and Environment, Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, or Plants and Microbes.

Advanced classes are small and promote interactive learning with combinations of laboratory, field, and lecture experiences. Independent Research is a central theme in our department because directed study in the field or laboratory with a faculty member gives the student first-hand experience with the scientific process and builds skills relevant for careers in science. Please see the Plant Biology Undergraduate Program (http://www.plantbio.uga.edu/programs/undergraduate) for more information and for descriptions of courses of study designed for particular job opportunities.
