The Department of Microbiology offers courses in general microbiology, prokaryotic biology, pathogenic microbiology, bacterial genetics, environmental microbiology and biotechnology. The department also provides intensive laboratory courses and independent research opportunities.

(This total does not include the 1-hour P.E. requirement)The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in Microbiology provides the knowledge and skillset to enable students to be career-ready in government and private industry research or public health fields. Graduates of the program go on to jobs in a wide variety of fields, including health care, public health, science policy, food safety, pharmaceuticals, industrial microbiology, and scientific research at academic and government institutions. The Microbiology major also prepares students for graduate and health sciences programs (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, public health), and veterinary medicine.
The initial courses in microbiology are MIBO 3500 and MIBO 3500L. It is recommended that these courses be taken at this University, preferably beginning in the second semester of the second year. Prerequisites are BIOL 1108-1108L and CHEM 2211. There are no placement examinations or mandatory co-curricular activities.
