Special Education BSED

Overview

The undergraduate program in Special Education offers a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with three emphasis areas: Adapted Curriculum, General Curriculum, and Educational Studies. Students in all three emphasis areas complete foundational coursework in both Adapted and General Curriculum. The primary differentiation among emphasis areas occurs during field experiences. Students in the Adapted Curriculum (AC) and General Curriculum (GC) emphasis areas engage in field experiences across both emphasis areas. Their final clinical placement, however, is completed with their intended teaching population, aligned with their selected major emphasis area. Upon successful completion of the program, these students are eligible for Induction-level teacher certification in both Adapted and General Curriculum in the state of Georgia.

Students in the Educational Studies emphasis area complete coursework but do not participate in field experiences and are not eligible for teacher certification.

Adapted Curriculum: For individuals interested in teaching students with moderate to severe autism and developmental disabilities in grades P–12. Training in this emphasis area will prepare teacher candidates to work with students working in an adapted curriculum, meaning they do not follow the common core implemented in most classrooms. The students who are most frequently served under adapted curriculum are those with moderate, severe or profound intellectual disability (MOID, SID, PID) as well as moderate to severe autism (ASD). Prospective applicants should see the Special Education undergraduate degree website (https://coe.uga.edu/academics/degrees/bsed-special-education-adapted-curriculum-and-autism) for admissions information and deadlines.

General Curriculum: For individuals interested in teaching students with mild disabilities who are primarily following the general curriculum in grades P-12. Training in this emphasis area will prepare teacher candidates to work in collaboration, inclusion, or resource models. The special education students who are most frequently served in these settings will include those with behavior disorders (BD), learning disabilities, (LD), mild intellectual disabilities (MID), other health impaired (OHI), and some students with autism. Prospective applicants should see the Special Education undergraduate degree website (https://coe.uga.edu/academics/degrees/bsed-special-education-general-curriculum) for admissions information and deadlines.

Educational Studies: For individuals who are interested in studying the characteristics, impact, and interventions related to disability but who do not wish to earn a teaching certificate in any area. Participants will complete a wide range of introductory-level coursework across emphasis areas, including adapted curriculum (students with moderate and severe disabilities and autism), general curriculum (students with mild intellectual and learning disabilities) and birth-kindergarten (young children who are at-risk for or have developmental disabilities). This program also includes the opportunity for participants to customize their program of study by selecting 1-2 courses each semester in related areas outside of special education. No field experiences are required. Participants who wish to pursue an Educational Studies emphasis will be required to sign an affirmation that they will not seek teaching certification in any area based on this program of study.
