Art History AB

Overview

The art history major equips students with a solid foundation in art and visual culture from antiquity to the present. With the program's emphasis on art's historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts, graduates are prepared to interpret and evaluate works of art across time and place. Students gain valuable experience through coursework, museum visits, and independent research. Major-related courses include two introductory art history surveys; 15 hours of introductory courses from other specified areas; 30 hours of upper-level art history courses and 18 hours of major electives within the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, including a second approved literature course in addition to the College requirement. A fourth semester in a foreign language is recommended as an elective for students considering graduate work in the field.
